A dental sealant is a liquid substance that hardens on contact with air. Dental professionals use it to smooth the occlusal surface (the surface involved during chewing) of molars or premolars in order to protect them from cavities. Practically speaking, since many patients have fine natural furrows on these teeth, the sealant is applied to prevent bacteria from entering and eventually transforming first into dental plaque and then into cavities.

Since dental furrows are usually finer than the bristles of a toothbrush, some food will inevitably be left behind despite perfect dental hygiene. Dr. Saba Dental Clinic therefore strongly recommends sealants for children and teens with natural micro-fissures on their molars or premolars.
